COVID-19 PALLIATIVES:BEYOND FOOD AND FACEMASKS

COVID-19 PALLIATIVES: BEYOND FOOD AND FACE MASKS

I have observed a number of inventions and creativity by Nigerians during the corona virus lockdown. Especially Sanitary wares, hand- washing devices and the like. Some have been presented in public, online and offline. My worry is whether relevant Government agencies, private investors and entrepreneurs and existing industries with the right capacities are giving necessary and meaningful attention and support to such. When this Covid-19 induced lockdown ends, life will continue and one hopes the manufacturing sector gains a few things in the nature of Patent for inventions and registration of Industrial Designs. These can boost Nigeria's export capacities, at least in Africa and its islands. Do not abandon these ideas and inventions now, only for the 'authors' to take them to other climes where they gain the right attention and then become items of importation to Nigeria. The yam pounder, among other game changing machines and devices, was invented by a Nigerian but bears a foreign patent. The palliatives some people need now are beyond food and face-masks.
There should be scouts working for the Bank of Industry and bodies like National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion and similar bodies to discover and fund viable projects, just like Football scouts fish out local talents that now earn thousands of pounds per week.
When this pandemic ends, Nigeria should not only count the number of the dead, and the number of cases to be recommended for the attention of EFCC and ICPC but also the number of breakthrough pharmaceutical and other researches and patentable or patented inventions, and registered industrial designs. We are a brilliant lot.
