Coronavirus: Starvation and Recession Looms

The world economic outlook darkens daily with no end in sight.it's clear we are heading for a recession when this is over.

Is it beginning to  look like we have a bigger problem in our hands which might kill faster than the virus in some countries? Let us take Nigeria as an example, there is this sudden unrest and insecurity because people are no longer able to fend for themselves and their dependants; starvation the atmosphere! The federal government/ state government palliatives are clearly not reaching all the necessary quarters at this point.  Now this is the bigger problem! How do we move forward from here? What are the intensive measures put in place to curb these attacks by hoodlums all over the country?

My brother in law wrote on Facebook yesterday
'Not surprising, the most popular Western lockdown strategies aren’t working for us in Naija. Deaths from hunger and violence borne out of desperation will soon outrank the virus itself, at this rate!

Who can blame any side for the recent occurrences of violence in Lagos and Ogun states? Hunger and starvation are existential threats that the human body will resist vigorously.

There must be another way to achieve physical distancing and improvements in hygiene without a total lockdown. A way that would cater for the economy of individuals and little groups, not some big data from Abuja that no average Nigerian can relate to, because it isn’t their reality.

Communities MUST be the drivers of their COVID-19 response. They must find their own solutions, grounded in science. Traditional rulers and influencers, including religious leaders, have a responsibility to understand this disease and provide responsible leadership to their little groups.

On the other hand, government MUST aggressively fund palliative projects and persistently suffocate the corruption that prevents the most vulnerable from benefiting... I'm not sure if I see this alternative ever working in a country like ours'

I can't agree less that there is an urgent need for the state governments to review their processes and find a way forward so as not to put the lives of innocent citizens in danger of been robbed by those who have become less privileged at this time.
